An employee at Kayelekera Uranium Mine of Paladin Energy Limited in Karonga died on Tuesday after a vehicle wheel he was inflating hit him on the chest.

According to an announcement by the company on its website, the employee Khwima Phiri who was working in the engineering workshop was struck by a light vehicle wheel he was inflating.

“It is with considerable regret that the company announces, it has suffered a workplace fatality at its Kayelekera Mine in the northern Malawi. A Malawi national employee, Mr Khwima Phiri who was employed in the mines engineering workshop died Thursday morning after being struck in the chest by a light vehicle wheel he was inflating at that time.

“Relevant authorities were notified and the police and the company have investigated the incident, with the findings and outcomes pending,” reads the announcement.

Meanwhile, some employees have expressed disappointment over the way the company handled the funeral, arguing that management paid little attention.

But in an interview, Paladin Energy general manager Greg Walker said the company accords funeral services all the respect they deserve and people who were making the complaints were not justified.
